The film, scheduled for release in 2024, is currently being shot in Budapest, where the atmosphere of the French capital has been recreated. But it is not ruled out that some scenes may also be shot in Livorno, Modigliani’s hometown, where the painter and sculptor spent his childhood and youth before moving permanently to Paris in 1906.
Modigliani is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, famous for his female portraits characterized by stylized faces and tapered necks, and for his stone and marble sculptures inspired by African and archaic art. His life was marked by poor health, aggravated by a dissolute lifestyle, and a difficult career, often hindered by critics and the public. He died at the age of only 35 from tubercular meningitis, leaving behind a vast artistic output, now on display in the world’s most important museums.
Depp’s film aims to pay tribute to the figure of Modigliani, but also to his city of origin, Livorno, which influenced his education and personality. Livorno, in fact, was a cosmopolitan and tolerant city where different cultures and religions coexisted, including the Jewish community, to which Modigliani’s family belonged. In Livorno, Modigliani began studying painting in the studio of Guglielmo Micheli, a pupil of Giovanni Fattori, and frequented the Caffè Bardi, a meeting place for artists. In Livorno, Modigliani returned twice, in 1909 and 1913, rediscovering the friends and places of his childhood. Finally, Livorno is home to his birthplace, at 38 Via Roma, now converted into a museum dedicated to his memory.
Modi is thus a film that promises to introduce the general public to Modigliani’s life and work, but also to enhance the bond between the artist and his city, Livorno, which could become a tourist and cultural destination for his admirers. A film that, as director Johnny Depp has stated, is intended to be a “bohemian ditty,” an ironic and passionate tribute to a rebellious and misunderstood genius.
