Site transitoire, land art in Tuscany

The Site Transitoire is a work of art located between the localities of Leonina and Mucigliani, in the municipality of Asciano, in the province of Siena. This stone sculpture was created by French artist Jean-Paul Philippe in 1993.

The work consists of different components: a seat that welcomes the wayfarer, who can freely choose whether to sit, stand up or lie down, and a large window inside which, sunlight is concentrated during sunset on the occasion of the summer solstice. Precisely during the day of the summer solstice, the sun sets in the flat of the large stone window, creating a truly enchanting spectacle 1.

The Site Transitoire is located in a silent place where art and nature intersect, generating an ‘incredible view of the Crete Senesi. The artist recounts his work this way: “Making that gesture, installing those stones, I realized that they drew in light and space the limits of a house: a dwelling without walls and with an invisible threshold. On the ground some slabs, a chair to welcome the passerby, a bench, a window, and for a roof the vault of heaven.

The artwork is a magical place in the heart of the Crete Senesi, where art and nature come together in a unique experience. The Site Transitoire is a work of art that invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between man and nature, and on the beauty that can result from the encounter between these two realities.
